Our advice is to never respond to phishing emails, never click on links in phishing emails, and delete them immediately. Tips to recognise phishing:
1. Striking message.
Often, a striking message is used to grab attention. Think of ‘Win a bike’ or ‘Lose 10 kg in two weeks’.
2. Impersonal salutation.
Phishing emails often have an impersonal salutation.
3. Spelling mistakes.
Phishing emails are getting better, but spelling mistakes can be a sign that something is not right.
4. Check the sender’s email address.
Always make sure that the sender’s email address is correct. If it says *** on behalf of Makro, it is almost certainly not legitimate.
5. Check the link in the email (without clicking).
Hover your mouse over the link in the email to see where the link leads. Check the domain.
6. Request for personal information.
It is often a phishing email if personal information is being requested.
7. Reference to an attachment.
Attachments can contain malware; avoid this by being cautious with attachments.
